COLUMBUS, Miss. – A new era is on the rise at the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Miss. After introducing men's soccer as the first men's sport to represent The W in intercollegiate athletics, the Owls baseball team will become the second as it kicks of its inaugural season on Friday, Feb. 9. Beginning on the road, The Owls will travel to Irving, Texas to take on the University of Dallas in a four-game series to open the season.
Head coach Matthew Wolfenbarger is also beginning a new era in his life as he starts his journey as a head coach for collegiate baseball. Coach Wolf, as he is affectionately called, came to the Owls after serving one year as the pitching coach for Coahoma Community College and three years as the head coach at Delta Academy in Marks, Miss.
With his knowledge of the game and his contacts in the coaching world, Coach Wolf has assembled a team of athletes with some of the best experience and talent in the south. Most of his players are local athletes from either Mississippi or Alabama and around a dozen of them have previous college playing experience.
Dallas will face the Owls after a 0-3 start in a three-game series at Sul Ross State University. After going 14-26 during the 2017 season, the Crusaders will look to improve on their current record as they take on The W.
The first game of the series is schedule for Friday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. The second and third games are scheduled as a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 10 and the final game will be played Sunday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m.
