DUBOIS, Penn. – The Owls baseball team did not allow the three-hour weather delay to shake their focus in Wednesday night's competition. Despite the late start time, The W players remained sharp and pulled out a 4-3 victory over Florida National in the third round of the USCAA Small College World Series.
The Owls triple threat Will Peters took over pitching duties in The W's second match-up against the Conquistadors. The Tallassee, Ala. native pitched a complete game for six strikeouts, three earned runs, and four hits against in his eighth pitching victory as a member of the Owls baseball team.
Leon "Trey" Petite had an almost perfect outing at the plate to head up the Owls offense. In a 3-for-3 appearance, the freshman left fielder tallied two RBIs and one run.
The W started the game's scoring effort in the bottom of the third inning. Petite scored the Owls first run on a sacrifice fly by Heath Ford. The Owls stayed alive in the inning and Prince Tolbert was able to score a second run on a single to left field by Damain Benefield.
The Owls defense held strong for most of competition but late in the seventh, the Conquistadors found a chink in the Owls armor with a three run homer.
Peters regrouped on the mound and served a swinging strikeout to close the side and end the game.
"That was one of the greatest games I have ever been a part of," said Head Baseball Coach Matthew Wolfenbarger. "These guys continue to find a way to get the job done. Our guys wanted to be there tonight and they wanted to win. We kept the energy going in the dugout and never let go of the momentum. Will pitched the best game I have ever seen him pitch, the defense stayed strong for him and the offense gave him just enough support to come away with a win. These guys earned it tonight. Another great win for our program."
The Owls will be back on the diamond on Wednesday, May 16 when they take on Selma University in the elimination round semi-final. First pitch is currently set for 12:30 p.m. EST/ 11:30 a.m. CST. Watch the game live and follow the live stats: HERE.
