WEST POINT, Ga. – The Mississippi University for Women men's soccer team had an uphill battle Wednesday, Sept. 20 against Point University during a midweek match-up. The Owls (0-6-1) scrambled against the Sky Hawks (6-1-1) offense and was powerless against their defense in the 9-0 loss.
Goalkeepers Selvin Lopez and John McGee played a half each to head the Owls defense. Each keeper fought hard to prevent The W loss but they were unable to get ahead of the shots. Lopez started the match to grab four saves with four goals allowed and McGee finished to record two saves with five goals allowed.
"We faced a talented Point University who entered with a 5-1-1 record," said head coach Tim Gould about Wednesday's match. "Their speed and movement off the ball combined with timely finishing gave us fits all game."
"As the year progresses," continued Gould, "we plan to improve and become more competitive for the entire 90 minutes. "
A weekend home game might be just the thing the Owls need to rebound from a slow start to the season. Sunday, Sept. 24, the Owls will look for better luck as they host Birmingham-Southern College.
