COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Owls men's soccer team played an intense game against in-state foe Belhaven University. Despite getting good field positions and making crucial saves at the right moment, The W fell 7-3 to Blazers on Saturday, Oct. 14.
Jonathan Lopez, freshman forward, had a big game against the Blazers. The Memphis, Tenn. native scored two of the Owls three goals in Saturday's match.
After finding themselves behind 1-0, Lopez scored the Owls first goal of the match 19 minutes into the first half. Belhaven committed a foul close to its own goal and Lopez was able to land a goal off a free kick.
Before the end of the half, Belhaven was able to put two more points on the board to enter the half up 3-1.
In the second half, the Blazers landed a goal just a minute after the clock started. The Owls answered the goal shortly after with a second goal by Lopez. Paxton Bound was credited with the assist for his third assist of the season.
Several mistakes by the Owls, including an own goal, allowed Belhaven to jump ahead of the Owls in scoring. With 30 minutes left in the game, the Blazers were up 5-2.
A Belhaven own goal appeared to respark the Owls offensive effort. The W made great plays and opened up several scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, the shots did not land and the Owls fell 7-3.
In addition to his 2 goals, Lopez recorded a third shot to lead his team in shots and goals.
In front of the goal, Selvin Lopez started the match for the Owls to record 63:56 of playing time. While on the field, Lopez tallied 6 saves with 5 goals allowed.
John McGee entered the game with 26 minutes left to relieve Lopez. During his time on the field, McGee grabbed 7 saves with 2 goals allowed.
The Owls will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 22 when they host Oakwood University. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
