JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women's volleyball team had an unlucky second day at the Belhaven Volleyball Tournament. On Saturday, Sept. 9, the Owls fell 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-15) to Centenary College - Louisiana and 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-20) to Belhaven University at the Heidelberg Gymnasium in Jackson, Miss.
"We were a little slow coming right out of the gates on these two matches," stated head coach Roxanne Hernandez. "We definitely competed with both opponents but unfortunately, unforced errors got the best of us and by the time we got around to eliminated them, it was just a bit too late."
Against Belhaven, Kayla King led the Owls offense. Playing in all three sets, King tallied 18 total attacks with six kills. On the defensive side of the ball, Haley McMurphey led the team with seven digs.
As a team, the Owls recorded 13 kills on 71 attacks with three errors, two server aces, 26 digs, and 2.0 blocks (one solo and two assists) for 17.0 points.
Belhaven recorded 30 kills on 79 total attacks with 14 errors, 25 assists, five server aces, 24 digs, and 3.0 blocks (two solo and four assists) for 39.0 points.
The Owls will return to action on Friday, Sept. 15 when they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to participate in the Huntingon College Volleyball Tournament. There, The W will face Huntingdon College, Rust College, Miles College, and LaGrange College.
