MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Mississippi University for Women women's volleyball team had little luck at the 2017 Blues City Invite at Rhodes College on Friday, Oct. 27 – Saturday, Oct. 28. After dropping game one of the tournament 3-1 against Louisiana College, day two was much of the same with a 3-0 loss versus Rhodes and a 3-0 loss against Fontbonne University.
The Owls entered the tournament a bit short staff with a starter and a couple of key players out with seasonal illnesses but The W team rallied together to but up its best effort in the face of adversity.
Against Rhodes, the Owls fell 3-0 (19-25, 12-25, 14-25) facing a tough opponent. The Owls improved in serve receive with just 5 reception errors and setting with only 1 ball handling error. As a team, the Owls tallied 20 kills on 101 total attacks, 18 assist, 5 service aces, 37 digs, 2 block solos, and four block assist for 29.0 points.
Loren Schmitt and Haley McMurphey were top performes for the Owls in their match against the Lynx. Schmitt led in kills and digs with six kills and nine digs and McMurphey led offensively with 7.5 points on 5 kills, 2 service aces, and 1 block assist.
Versus Fontbonne, the long weekend began to wear on the Owls, hurting their statistical performance. In the final match of the Blue Invite, the Owls fell 3-0 (14-25, 10-25, 2-25).
Catelyn Ruth stepped up offensively in the match Griffins to lead the team in kills. The Caledonia, Miss. native picked up 5 kills on 8 total attacks with no errors for a .625 kill percentage.
Sadie Mitchell led the team in digs with six and McMurphey tied Ruth in points with 5.0.
The Owls will bring the game back home on Saturday, Nov. 4 when they host a tri-match. The W will play in its last two matches of the 2017 season when they take on Martin Methodist and Judson College. The Owls first match is scheduled for 12 p.m.
