JACKSON, Miss. – The Owls volleyball team opens the 2017 season 0-2 after back-to-back losses at the Millsaps Volleyball Tournament.
The Owls competed against Millsaps College and Dillard University in the first two matches of the tournament to kick of the 2017 season. Despite falling 0-3 to both teams, the Owls looked good on the court and showed improvement over last week's exhibition matches.
"We did a much better job serving during these two matches" said head volleyball coach Roxanne Hernandez. "Our passing fell off a bit as the day went on, but our blocks started to improve towards the end of the day so that's something I hope to bring together and keep going tomorrow."
Against Millsaps, the Owls went 0-3 (7-25, 14-25, 19-25) on the Majors court. Loren Schmitt led The W offense with 15 total attacks and three kills. She also led the Owls defense with 11 digs and one reception error.
As a team, the Owls tallied 9 kills on 70 total attacks and 31 digs with 11 reception errors.
After facing Millsaps, the Owls were given an hour's rest then went back on the court to face the Bleu Devils of Dillard. Against Dillard, the Owls seemed to find their rhythm and make better offensive decisions.
As a team, the Owls recorded 11 kills on 63 total attacks and 20 digs with 11 reception errors.
In the last set against Dillard, The W staged a comeback. The Owls scored the first points and held on to the lead until an attack error shifted the momentum. They fell behind 6-9 but slowly started catching up to the Dillard. The Owls regained the lead 12-11 on a service ace by Sadie Mitchell. The Owls held on strong for the rest of the match but it was not enough. The W closed the match 0-3 (12-25, 5-25, 14-25).
The Owls will take on day two of the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 2.
