Cross Country Finishes 13th in Last Meet of the Season

CLINTON, Miss. - The Owls women's cross country team competed in its last meet of the season at the 2017 Mississippi College Invitational. During the 5K run, the Owls placed 13th out of 16 at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Miss.

The W competed against University of Alabama - Huntsville, Blue Mountain College, Mississippi College, University of Texas - Dallas, William Carey University, Spring Hill College, University of Texas - Dallas, LeTourneau University, Bethel University - Tennessee, East Texas Baptist University, University of Arkansas - Monticello, Belhaven University, Martin Methodist College, Jarvis Christian College, and Tougaloo College. The Owls were able to outrun Martin Methodist, Jarvis Christian, and Tougaloo.

The runners competed hard.  Lorena Surducan and Yesenia Gonzalez  beat their previous personal records to run their best time of the season and  give the team that extra needed push.

For the fifth consecutive meet, Karigan Bonner led the Owls with a time of 26:05.65 to finished in 73rd place out of 119 runners. Her average mile was 8:24.0.

The W finished with an average time of 28:53.22.

"Today was a great way to end our last competition," said head coach Morgan Turnipseed. "This was our seniors last cross country meet and I was very proud of the way they lead today. We've seen growth in our times throughout the year, but I'm most proud of their growth as runners and their attitude running. We are looking forward to next year and looking at what it takes to help our program excel even moore."

At the conclusion of today's match, the Owls celebrated the successful season with Mississippi University for Women alumni. The alumni from the Jackson area hosted the Owls at Keifer's restaurant. "We love getting to spend time with (the alumni) and are so grateful for their hospitality," said Turnipseed. "It's always good to see alumni continue to be such strong supporters of The W and its students and athletes."
