COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owl's women's cross country team is set to begin the 2017 season at the Mississippi College Season Opener. The 4K run will be held at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Miss. on Friday, Sept. 1.
The Owls, with just two weeks of practice under their belt, got a taste of competition last week at MC Twilight Two Mile exhibition run. The 3200m race gave the team the opportunity to test their speed under the pressures of competition. The times made were used as a foundation to prepare for the season opening meet.
Yesenia Gonzalez, the junior Pontotoc, Miss. native, led the Owls in the two-mile with a 17.23 finish and may prove to be the team leader in the upcoming meet. As a team, head coach Morgan Turnipseed was happy with the results and excited about the future of the team.
"They met the times we were wanting them to," said Turnipseed. "The biggest thing I was proud of is how they finished hard with all they had. This showed me as a coach, that every second counts to them. They've proven just from the meet that they have strong hearts and we are looking to continue that in every race. With that same determination in practice, I believe their times will keep dropping and they will only go faster."
The MC Season Opener women's race is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. Find the final results on the Owls social media pages or at OwlsAthletics.com.
