Owls Athletics Mourns the Loss of Former Athletic Director Dr. Jo Spearman

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Owls Athletic Department mourns the loss of Dr. Jo Spearman, former athletic director.

"Today is a very sad day for the MUW athletics family," said currenty athletic director Jason Trufant.  "Dr. Spearman guided this athletics department for many years and was a one of the first individuals I met on this campus. Welcoming, genuine, thoughtful, and leader are just a few words that come to mind when I think of her. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. She will be forever missed."

She began her career at MSCW as an instructor in August, 1974 and retired as Emeritus Professor and Head, Division of Health and Kinesiology; Athletic Director in 2005.  With 31 years of history, experience, and knowledge, Dr. Spearman and four close friends and former W faculty family members, documented the history of athletics at The W in a book filled with pictures, data, stories and many memories.  "Legacy of the Blues - A Century of Athletics at The W" by Dot Burdeshaw, Barbara Garrett, Jo Spearman, Joan Thomas, and Martha Wells.

Dr. Spearman had recently relocated to Texas to be closer to family. She was 77.

A memorial service for Dr. Jo Spearman will be Saturday January 26th 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church Columbus, MS.
