Five Owls Receive USCAA Player of the Week Honors

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls Athletics Department collected five USCAA player of the week accolades for its effort during the fall opening week of competition.

Sarah Gilliland, Mississippi University for Women

Sophomore | Goalkeeper | Brandon, Mississippi

Sarah Gilliland of Mississippi University for Women is the USCAA Women’s Division I Soccer Goalie of the Week. Sarah has started both games thus far for her squad. Although they are 0-2 on the season, Sarah is proving to be a great asset to her team. This week she totaled 14 saves, which makes her save percentage .778 %. Ten of her saves were made in the season opener against Delta State.

LaRico Lewis, Mississippi University for Women

Junior | Forward | Douglasville, Georgia

LaRico Lewis of Mississippi University for Women is the USCAA Men’s Division I Soccer Player of the Week. Lewis proved to be essential to his squad this week as he was able to score the first goal of the season for the Owls in their 2-0 victory over Blackburn College. Over a 2-game span, Lewis scored one goal and recorded six shots.  

John McGee, Mississippi University for Women

Sophomore | Goalkeeper | Troy, Illinois

John McGee of Mississippi University for Women is the USCAA Men’s Division I Goalie of the Week. McGee guarded the goal with a vengeance as the Owls started off the season on a positive note. His clean sheet helped lead his squad to a 2-0 victory in their season opener.

Courtney Poole, Mississippi University for Women

Junior | Libero/Defensive Specialist | Ohatchee, Alabama

Courtney Poole of Mississippi University for Women is the USCAA Women’s Volleyball Division I Player of the Week. The junior transfer made an immediate impact for the Owls from Mississippi with big defensive plays during the Belhaven tournament. Poole recorded 15 digs and a service ace in her team’s match against Central Baptist.

Mary Grace Prine, Mississippi University for Women

Sophomore | Outside Hitter| Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Mary Grace Prine of Mississippi University for Women is the USCAA Women’s Volleyball Division I Setter of the Week.  The traditional outside hitter from Hattiesburg, Mississippi stepped into the setter role when her team needed it. In the team’s final game of the week against Central Baptist she had a season high 14 assists while recording seven digs.
