COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls baseball team will play in front of their home crowd earlier than expected as the original times have been moved due to possible inclement weather. Now, The W will take on Crowley's Ridge College on Thursday, Feb. 15 in a 4 p.m. doubleheader and on Friday, Feb. 16 at noon.
The Owls are off to a slow start during their 2018 inaugural season. Opening on the road, The W was unable to pick up a win during the three-game series against the University of Dallas. The Owls fell 12-4, 11-4, and 6-5 on the Crusader's home field.
Despite the losses, the Owls performance had several bright spots. As a team, the W maintained .225 batting average and a .349 on base percentage against Dallas.
Sumpter Bass, sophomore infielder, played in all three games to lead the Owls with a .333 batting average. The Clarksdale, Miss. native also led the team in runners batted in (3) and one base percentage (.333).
On the mound, freshman pitcher Drew Williams led his team with a 1.50 earned run average. The Maylene, Ala. native made one appearance for six innings with five hits-against, two strikeouts, one walk, and one earned run.
Crowley's Ridge will also be searching for its first win of the season. The Pioneers played at Williams Baptist in their season opener to fall 8-6 and 11-1.
First pitch of the series will be Thursday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. on the Columbus High School Baseball Field. If you cannot make it out to see the games, make sure to watch the game live on the Owls livestream: HERE.
