Baseball to Face Tougaloo in First Homecoming Game

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls baseball team will host Tougaloo College on Saturday, March 24 in the 2018 homecoming day doubleheader. The W, now 10-9, will take on the 12-11 Bulldogs at the Columbus High School Baseball Field in Columbus, Miss.

The Owls enter Saturday's match-up after back-to-back losses versus Blue Mountain College. The W is looking to redeem itself as it takes on the Bulldogs in front of a homecoming crowd.

At the plate, Owls power hitter Damain Benefield leads his team's offense with a .429 batting average, a .547 on base percentage, and a .595 slugging percentage. The freshman infielder has played in 15 of the 19 games to tally 42 at-bats, nine runs, 18 hits (four doubles and one home run) for 12 RBIs.

Leading the team in runs batted in, Prince Tolbert and Brandon Jones are tied to record 14 RBIs. Tolbert, a junior outfielder, has played in 12 games for 38 at-bats, 11 runs, 10 hits (four doubles, two triples, and a homerun) to maintain a .553 slugging percentage.

Jones, freshman infielder, has played in 13 games for 36 at-bats, 12 runs, 12 hits (three doubles) for a .333 batting average, a .432 on base percentage, and a .417 slugging percentage.

On the mound, freshman pitcher Drew Williams leads the Owls bullpen with a 3-3 record and a 4.33 ERA. The Maylene, Ala. native has made six appearances for four complete games, 35.1 innings pitched, 22 strikeouts, and 27 runs (17 earned).

Backing up Williams on the mound is dual threat Will Peters. The versatile utility player holds a 3-2 record on the mound with five appearances and five starts, 22.1 innings with one complete game, 22 strikeouts, 33 hits against, and 24 runs (17 earned). At the plate, Peter holds a .379 batting average, a .441 on base percentage, and a .397 slugging percentage. He ties Heath Ford with 22 hits to lead the team.

As a team, The W has recorded 138 runs, a .303 batting average, a .426 on base percentage, and a. 377 slugging percentage.

Tougaloo has recorded 137 runs while maintaining a .290 batting average, and a .368 on base percentage.
