Slow Start Cost Baseball Game One at Crowley's Ridge

PARAGOULD, Ark.. - The Owls baseball team was unable to stage a comeback on Friday, dropping the first of a three-game road match-up against Crowley's Ridge College. With the stumble an NAIA foe, The W drops to 17-11 on the season.

For an early 3-0 lead, Crowley's Ridge hit a triple and a double in the bottom of the second inning to score two runs and a single for a run in the fourth. 

In the bottom of the sixth, the Pioneers bats found holes in the Owls defense to collect five hits and four runs to advance their lead to 7-0.

Not to be counted out, the Owls offense came alive in the eighth for late game scoring. Leroy "Trey" Petite connected with the ball to double down the first base line and then Prince Tolbert doubled to left field to bring him home for The W's first run.

Still pushing to close the game ahead, The W also sparked offensively in the ninth. Brandon Jones singled to center field and RJ Cox singled to the shortstop for hits in the inning. Closing the game to 7-3, Jones and Birdsong recorded runs on a groundout to complete the Owls scoring run.

At the plate, freshman catcher RJ Cox led The W with a 3-for-5 appearance. Collecting a total of two RBIs, Tolbert and Lukas Murphy recorded one RBI each while Jones, Birdsong, and Petite tallied one run each to round out the Owls game one scoring.

Freshman pitcher David Standifer was credited with the loss on the mound. Pitching 5.0 innings, Standifer recorded three strikeouts and three runs (two earned).

Closing the game, Eiland Cleckler pitched 3.0 innings for two strikeouts and four earned runs.
