BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Damain Benefield records five hits (one double) for one run and one RBI while Heath Ford went 3-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs to lead the Owls offense against Blue Mountain College. Despite the great offense, the Owls were unable to top the Toppers early lead to fall 16-11 at the BMC Sportsplex on Tuesday, April 24.

Down 4-0 entering the top of the fourth inning, Ford started the Owls scoring effort with a triple to right field. On the batted ball, Leon "Trey" Petite, Prince Tolbert, and Will Peters were able to reach home plate to score the Owls first three runs. Later in the inning, Benefield singled to center to bring Ford home to tie the game 4-4.

Blue Mountain answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs then extended their lead to 9-4 with three additional runs in the sixth. Both teams collected single runs in the seventh for a score of 10-5.

Bats lit up the field in the eighth inning. The W took its first lead of the competition with sixth runs on six hits in the top of the inning.

The Owls lead was short-lived with the Toppers matching the Owls runs in the bottom of the inning for the final lead of the game.

On the mound, Petite took the pitching loss after entering the game in the seventh inning. A freshman utility player pitched 2.0 innings for one strikeout and six earned runs. Petite started the game in left field for a 2-for-3 appearance with two runs and two RBIs.

The Owls eagerly await May 7 when they find out if they will participate in the USCAA Small College World Series. The W is currently ranked sixth in the USCAA Coaches Poll and have a real chance of completing its first season at the championship tournament.
