COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls baseball team grabbed another doubleheader victory on Thursday, March 7 against Crowley's Ridge. The W improves to 7-1 on the season.
Game One (W, 9-1)
The Owls grabbed an early lead with three runs scored by the second inning. The Pioneers answered in the top of the third inning with one run of their own to put The W ahead 3-1.
In both the fifth and the sixth inning, the Owls scored to advance with six runs to secure the win of 9-1.
At the plate, Brandon Jones had the best outing with a 3-for-3 appearance and added one run to the Owls scoring effort.
Logan Suggs tied RJ Cox for two hits on three at-bats as Suggs had two runs and Cox had one run and 2 RBIs. Another standout player for the Owls was Prince Tolbert who had a 1-for-2 appearance with three RBIs.
On the mound, RJ Dell was credited with the pitching win. The junior from Memphis, Tenn. pitched the entire game for five strikeouts, one run (one earned), and three hits against.
Coach Wolf's Thoughts
"We were outstanding in game 1. I think it was the most complete game we've played. We swung it well top to bottom and we played outstanding defense. RJ Dell was phenomenal for us tonight again. I love the way he's attacking hitters right now and just letting our defense play behind him. To throw a complete game in 75 pitches is just great work."
Game Two (W, 8-4)
Despite the success, the Owls rode the previous game, they were not as strong in the beginning as they were, in the end, able to take the victory over Crowley's Ridge 8-4.
Crowley's Ridge took the lead of 2-1 in the first four innings. For the rest of the game, it was battle to the finish line with The W putting up six runs in the fifth, and one run in the seventh while the Pioneers scored one run in the fifth, and the final run in the seventh.
On the mound, David Standifer took the Owls victory with 6.1 innings pitched, four strikeouts, and two earned runs.
Luke Hobson delivered the save with 0.2 innings pitched with one strikeout.
Coach Wolf's Thoughts
"[I am] really proud of David Standifer. He had a great start for us. He gave up a two spot in the first after a walk and an error, but he responded and threw really well. That speaks volumes to how he has matured mentally. They threw a really good lefty at us, and our offense just ground it out. Once we got to the pen, we got it going. Luke Hobson was also great out of the pen. We love having a guy to bring in that we know is just going to fill it up."
The Owls baseball team will be back in action Friday, March 8, to take on Crowley's Ridge. The first pitch is set for 10 a.m.
