Owls Split Doubleheader with Selma, 11-7 and 14-7

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The W faced Selma University in doubleheader action March 29th and was able to split the day with a 11-7 victory and a 14-7 loss.

GAME 1 (W, 11-7)

The Owls played extremely hard against Bulldogs Friday afternoon. The W struggeld to score in the beginning, but the Owls pushed themselves offensively to get on the board.

In the bottom of the fourth, Sophomore, Damain Benefield hit his second homer this season, allowing Cody Brewington and Heath Ford to score and bringing the Owls to the lead of 6-5.

In the top of the fifth, Selma answered with a home run for 2 RBIs, bringing them to lead 7-6.

In the bottom of the inning, the Owls delivered two runs as Reese Wagner scored on an error by the third baseman and Leon "Trey" Petite scored shortly afterwards on another error by the third baseman.

Owls starting pitcher, RJ Dell, received his fourth win on the mound. The Memphis, Tenn. native, pitched 6.1 innings for three strikeouts, 11 hit, three walks, and seven runs.

Luke Hobson, junior pitcher, entered the game to pitch 0.2 innings for one strikeout, no runs, no hits, and no walks.

Damain Benefield had the most successful outing at the plate with a 2-for-3 appearance with one run and four RBIs.

GAME 2 (L, 14-7)

The Owls struggled to get in a groove in game two, finding themselves behind 14-3 after four innings. The W continued to battle to cut down Selma's lead with four runs by the end of the seventh inning.

Leading the Owls at the plate, with a 2-for-2 appearance were Brandon Jones, RJ Cox, and Bret Linton. The Owls power hitters were Jones, Cox, Linton, Jackson Norris-Jones, Leon "Trey" Petite, and Chase Nosworthy who led the team with one RBI each.

At the plate, Luke Hobson took the loss on the mound. The junior right-hander pitched 1.2 innings for two strikeouts, six hits against, and four earned runs.


On Monday, April 1, the Owls will host a doubleheader against Tougaloo College. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
