Owls Baseball Splits Away with Rust College, 5-4 and 6-3

JACKSON, Miss. – The Owls baseball team splits doubleheader action at Rust College on Tuesday, April 16. The W fell short in game one 5-4 and took game two 6-3 for a 16-7 overall record.

GAME ONE (L,5-4)

A rough offense cost the Owls baseball team the first game of the day.

The first two innings of the matchup were slow as the Owls scored one run and each team went scoreless in the second inning.  

The Owls kicked off the game with Damain Benefield coming home off a double made by Brandon Jones. Shortly after, Reese Wagner singles up the middle and advanced to second allowing Brandon Jones to score the Owls third run of the game. As the W transitioned to defense, they allowed the Bearcats to score two runs.  The Owls baseball team continued to work hard on the field as Prince Tolbert caught the second out in centerfield. Following with the third out at shortstop was Heath Ford.

In the top of the fourth and fifth, the Owls were unable to convert the defense's momentum into an offensive benefit and The W continued with a scoreless streak bringing the score to 3-5 with Rust College leading by the sixth inning.

In the top on the sixth, Reese Wagner scored the Owls last run as Heath Ford reached first base on a muffed throw.

On the mound, junior right-handed pitcher RJ Dell took the loss on the mound. The Memphis, Tenn. native pitched 4 .0 innings for seven hits against and three earned runs. Junior, Luke Hobson entered to release Dell and pitched 2.0 innings with one strikeout.

Game Two (W,6-3)

In the second game of the day, sophomore pitcher Will Peters pitched the entire game to record five strikeouts, six hits against, and three earned runs for his second win on the mound.

Leon "Trey" Petite, sophomore utility, recorded the first hit of the game and the Owls first hit of the day with a single to shortstop. Petite scored the Owls first run based on a throwing error.

The W continued to put up a good fight as they left the Bearcats scoreless bringing the score to 4-0 by the bottom of the fifth.

In the sixth inning, the Owls scored one run and Rust College scored three runs due to a sacrifice fly and homered. The sixth inning ended with the Owls leading 5-3.

In the seventh and final inning, Bobby Neal hit to the centerfield allowing RJ Cox to score on a sacrifice fly and grabbed the Owls 6-3 victory.

The Owls will travel on Friday, April 19 to face Crowley's Ridge. The first pitch of the matchup is set for noon.
