Baseball Struggles During Road Doubleheader at Crowley's Ridge

PARAGOULD, Ark. – The W baseball team hit the road for the last time of the 2019 regular season with a trip to Paragould, Ark to take on Crowley's Ridge College on Saturday. The doubleheader was originally scheduled as a part of a four-game series but was cut to two after a couple of days of bad weather. The Owls struggled defensively against the Pioneers to drop both game of the day, 4-3 and 8-0. 

GAME ONE (L, 4-3)

Owls sophomore pitcher David Standifer took the mound opposite Crowley's Ridge right-hander Dallan Stotts in game one of the weekend doubleheader. 

Standifer, a right-hander from Mobile, Ala., pitched a solid four innings for two strikeouts, two earned runs, and four hits against. He was relieved in the fifth inning by Luke Hobson who pitched the final two innings for the loss. The Ripley, Miss. native also recorded two strikeouts with two earned runs and five hits against. 

Offensively, both teams blanked in the first inning with Crowley's Ridge scoring the first run of the day in the second inning. In the bottom of the inning, Cody Fortner led off with a double to deep right and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. He went on to score the Pioneers first run on a single by Peyton Maddox. 

The Owls answered in the third inning with Lukas Murphy making it on base with a single up the middle. He advanced to second when Prince Tolbert was hit by a pitch, then came home on a double down the right field line from Heath Ford.  

The Pioneers regained a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning after Tyler Henfling scored on a fielder's choice. 

In the fourth, The W tied the game at 2-2 after Johndavid Birdsong scored on a single to third by RJ Cox

The Owls got their first lead of the game in the fifth, scoring its last run on a single by Damain Benefield that sent Leroy "Trey" Petite home. 

After the top of the fifth, Crowley's Ridge was able to keep the Owls scoreless for the rest of the game while collecting two more runs for the 4-3 victory in game one. 

Benefield led the Owls at the plate with a 2-for-3 appearance with one RBI. Ford and Cox tied Benefield with one RBI each. 

GAME TWO (L, 8-0)

In game two, the Owls were unable to get the offense going while the Pioneers produced runs in four different frames to defeat The W 8-0. 

For the second game of the day, Owls (16-9) sent out freshman left-hander Zachary Reimann to square off on the mound against Crowley's Ridge (15-26) junior pitcher Kyle Rappold. Reimann pitched the first three innings for the loss. He delivered two strikeouts with five runs (three earned) and six hits again. 

John David Topik took over duties on the mound in the fourth inning. He held down pitching duties for two innings with two strikeouts, two runs (one earned), and three hits against. 

Closing the game, Courtlan Frost pitched the final inning for one strikeout, one walk, and one run. 

At the plate, Bobby Neal led The W with a 2-for-2 appearance. 


The Owls will be back in action on Tuesday, April 23 when they host Stillman College for their last home doubleheader of the season. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
