COLUMBUS, Miss. – Junior forward Ill'yan Scott, Jr. scored a game high of 21 points in the Owls season opener versus Blue Mountain College on Monday, Nov. 12. Despite the effort ,The W was unable to capture the victory, falling 81-74.
Along with the 21 points, the Pascagoula, Miss. native contributed, nine rebounds, three blocks, one steal, and one assists. Junior guard Keith Harris, sophomore guard Shon Wright, and junior guard Tre Pinkston also lent double-digit points to the Owls offense with 17, 11, and 10 points respectively.
As a team, the Owls shot 41.2 percent from the field, 32.0 percent behind the arc, and 62.5 from the free-throw line. Blue Mountain stayed ahead of the Owls, shooting 51.7 percent from the field, 44.4 percent in three-point range, and 64.7 percent at the line.
The W out-rebounded Blue Mountain 40-36 and was more aggressive with its defense with five blocks to the Toppers one.
"First off, I would like to thank the crowd and everyone involved," said head coach Brian Merkel. "It was an incredible atmosphere for our guys to play in front of. We could've easily folded it in, but our guys fought and got back to within one point of the lead. We will continue to work hard and improve. We look forward to Wednesday's game. "
The Owls will be back on their home court on Wednesday, Nov. 14 when they host Talladega College at 7:30 p.m. Come out and support The W as it searches for its first win of the season.
