JACKSON, Miss. – Junior forward Ill'yan Scott led The W with 20 points off the bench in the Owls 66-64 overtime victory over Howard Payne University. This victory is the first in program history and The W men's basketball team improves to 1-5 on the season.
Scott, a native of Pascagoula, Miss., played for 25 minutes to go 7-for-9 from the field, 1-for-1 in 3-point range, and 5-7 at the line in the Owls first win of the season. He also collected seven rebounds, one assist, two steals, and two blocks in the effort.
On rebounds, Clark brought down eight boards and Wilkerson and Scott were responsible for seven each.
As a team, The W shot 40.4 percent from the field, 30.0 percent in 3-point range, and 48.3 percent at the free throw line.
Howard Payne went 37.5 percent from the field, 31.3 percent in 3-point range, and 62.5 percent at the line.
"[I'm] incredibly proud of my guys today," said head coach Brian Merkel. "They fought and fought through adversity and were finally able to come out with a win. Every single guy on our roster contributed in a positive way. It was great to see their hard work pay off."
After a week on the road, the Owls return home on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when The W takes on Tougaloo College in doubleheader action. Tip-off for the women's game is set for 5:30 p.m. The men's game will begin immediately following.
