COLUMBUS, Miss – A 16-point performance from Josh Skinner and a 14-point, 17-rebound double-double from DJ Clark led the Owls men's basketball team to its first home victory in program history Thursday night. In Emma 'Ody' Pohl Gymnasium, The W defeat USCAA sister-institution Campbellsville University – Somerset 87-71 in its first match-up in the new year.
Skinner finished the night with a team-high of 16 points going 6-for-10 from the field and 4-for-7 in three-point range. while Clark recorded his fourth double-double of the season. Clark, a senior forward, went 6-for-14 from the field and 2-for-2 at the line while bringing down 15 defensive boards and 2 offensive boards. The Indianola, Miss. native was also responsible for five assists and two steals.
"[I am] really excited to get the win tonight," said Owls head coach Brian Merkel. "Somerset is a really tough team and I'm proud of how our guys responded to some adverse moments throughout the game. We are looking forward to building on this win with a road game on Sunday."
As a team, the Owls numbers game improved significantly over than the season average. From the field, the Owls landed 47.0 percent of their shots with a 42.1 percent accuracy in three-point range. At the line, the Owls shot 17-for-21 to make 81.0 percent of their free-throws.
CU – Somerset shot below its season average, shooting 36.6 percent from the field, 30.8 percent in three-point range, and 50.0 percent at the free-throw line.
With Thursday's game, the Owls improve to 2-12 on the season while the Tigers fall to 0-11.
The W will hit the road on Sunday, Jan. 13, traveling to Somerset, Ky. for a road rematch against Campbellsville – Somerset. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
