COLUMBUS, Miss. – In a high energy game where there were nine ties and eight lead changes, the Owls men's basketball team outlasted Selma University to extend its winning streak to three in an 86-80 victory Thursday evening.
Sophomore guard Shon Wright led The W (4-12) with a season-high 18 points, making his sixth double-figure scoring effort. Off the bench, the Shaw, Miss. native went 5-for-8 from the field including 3-for-5 in long-range. He was perfect at the line to go 5-for-5 to add five additional points.
The Owls dominated in bench points with 38 to just 26 for Selma. The two teams were equal in turnovers with 16 but The W gathered 23 points off turnovers while the Bulldogs had 17.
The Owls hit 26 of 55 (47.3 percent) from the floor and 23 of 32 from the free throw line. Selma made 29 of 67 from the field (43.3 percent) and 17 of 27 at the line (63.0 percent).
To begin the game, Jones hit a three-point jumper to put the Owls on the board first. Selma answered just seconds later with a two-point jumper to cut the Owls lead to 3-2. For the rest of the half, the two teams traded points but The W would outlast Selma in the effort to enter halftime ahead 39-38.
In the second half, the Owls had a 25-14 run for its largest lead of 12 points with 9:31 remaining. The Bulldogs then went on a run of their own to tie the game at 76. It was anybody's game but a string of Selma fouls kept the Owls at the line. The W hit six free throws in the last two minutes of the game to seal the victory.
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 19 when they host Morris College. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. CT.
