COLUMBUS, Miss. – A three-point jumper with less than a second on the clock robs the Owls men's basketball team of a victory over Morris College. The W fought hard against the Hornets but fell 81-78 in Emma 'Ody' Pohl Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Tavonta Jones scored 16 points, pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists to lead the Owls in scoring against Morris. DJ Clark put up his fifth double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Shon Wright added 13 points and Josh Skinner grabbed 11 to round out double-figure scoring.
The Owls shot the ball well, hitting just under half (28-57) of their shots from the field and 90.5 percent (28-57) at the line. Morris came close to the Owls accuracy on the field shooting 48.4 percent (30-62) and 73.3 percent at the free throw line. However, the Hornets had better success in the long-range shooting 47.6 percent (10-21) from beyond the arc while holding The W to a mere 15.0 percent (3-20).
The W committed 21 turnovers in the game while forcing the Hornets into 13. The W scored only nine points off of Morris miscues, while the Hornets got 22 off of Owls mistakes.
The W held a 27-24 advantage in bench points, as well as a 44-26 edge on points in the paint.
It would be almost two minutes after the game's start before a Hornet layup would put the first two points on the board. The Owls answered less than 20 seconds later with a layup from Clark to tie the game. In the half, Morris did not shoot as well as The W but performed better in three-point range to take the period 41-40.
In the second half, the Owls went on a 14-6 run for their largest lead of 65-57 with 6:27 left in the game. The Hornets followed with a run of their own to catch up with The W and tie the game at 69. The two teams alternated scoring and with back-to-back three-pointers, Morris pulled ahead 78-75. With 2.8 seconds left on the clock, Skinner made a three-pointer of his own to once again tie the game. As the buzzer was about to sound, Morris sank a last-second three-pointer to claim the victory.
The W returns to action on Friday, Jan 25 when they host Champion Christian in Emma 'Ody' Pohl Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
