SUMTER, S.C. – After being down by 13 points, the Owls men's basketball team rallied against Morris College to defeat the Hornets 85-82 Saturday afternoon. With the victory, The W improves to 6-15 on the season.
Tavonta Jones, for the second time this week, led the Owls offense. The Meridian, Miss. native went 7-for-12 from the floor including 2-for-3 in three-point range. He also grabbed four points at the line to tie the game-high of 20 points.
DJ Clark recorded his eighth double-double this season with a game-high 12 rebounds and 14 points. He also recorded five assist and two blocks in the effort.
As a team, the Owls shot 53.2 percent from a field and a season-high 52.2 percent in three-point range.
Morris College hit 41.6 percent from the floor, 36.4 percent in three-point range, and 62.5 percent at the line.
The Hornets edged out the Owls in rebounds 43-40 and turned the Owls 16 turnovers into 26 points. Morris committed only nine turnovers lending only eight points to The W effort
In the paint, the Owls outscored the Hornets 42-32 and had a more productive bench 30-9.
Both teams battled hard with three ties and two lead changes. The game was decided in the last second of the game with back-to-back missed shots by Morris that could have tied or won the game. The W stayed strong on defense and was able to outlast Morris, 85-82.
The Owls will return to action on Monday, Feb. 4 when they host Oakwood University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
