COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owl men's basketball team will officially open the 2019-20 season when it travels to Laurel, Miss. to take on Southeastern Baptist College on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m.
The W gave a season preview in an exhibition game at Louisiana State University – Shreveport on Monday, Nov. 4. Every member of the robust roster had the chance to compete but the Owls fell 117-68 to the Pilots.
The Owls return three starters from the 2018-19 season; Keith Harris, Tre Pinkston, and Tavonta Jones. They, plus two additional seniors, Carlos Wilkerson and Jonte Moultrie, are expected to bring experience and leadership to the freshman and transfer heavy team.
Last season, Jones led the Owls in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game and was assisted in the scoring effort by Harris who averaged 10.9 points per game.
The W will need someone step into the hole left by USCAA All-American DJ Clark who was just shy of a double-double average and led the team in rebounds per game. The Indianola, Miss. native who graduated in May was the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 11.6 points per game and 9.8 rebounds.
"We are looking forward to our first game of the 2019-20 season," said head coach Brian Merkel. "Going on the road against a tough opponent like SBC will be a great test, but our guys are excited and ready for the challenge. We have had a great few weeks of practice and are excited to see how that carries over to the game."
