LAUREL, Miss. – Tavonta Jones served up 29 points in the 2019 Season Opener for the Owls men's basketball team. The senior guard was supported by his high energy teammates in the match-up against Southeastern Baptist College Saturday evening, but it was not enough to bring home a victory. The W fell 100-89 to begin the season 0-1.
In the high-scoring competition, Jones was not the only Owl to score in the double-digits. Keith Harris scored 10 points in the first half alone and closed the match with 18 total points.
Wilkerson also led the Owls in rebounds with a game high 12 for a double-double.
The W shot well from the floor with a 49.3 percent field goal percentage while shooting 38.9 percent from three-point range. The Owls were more accurate than the Chargers who only shot 44.0 percent from the floor and 30.0 percent from behind the arc.
The Owls downfall was free-throw shooting (58.3) and turnovers (25).
"I am proud of the way our guys fought tonight in a tough environment," said head coach Brian Merkel. "Our defensive effort must improve, but the potential for this team is there. We will continue to work and we look forward to the next challenge."
The Owls will be back on the court on Tuesday, Nov. 12 when they travel to Blue Mountain College as part of a midweek doubleheader. The women's game is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. and the men's game will begin immediately after.
