COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls men's basketball team will hit the road again on Tuesday when they travel to Blue Mountain, Miss. to take on Blue Mountain College.
The W (0-1) opened the season on Saturday with a 100-89 loss at Southeastern Baptist College.
Senior Tavonta Jones leads the Owls in scoring, with a career-high and program-high of 29 points in the game against the Chargers.
Senior guard Keith Harris picked up 18 points, senior forward Carlos Wilkerson tallied 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, and senior guard Tre Pinkston scored 12 points to round out the double-digit scoring.
The W hit 49.3 percent of its shots (34-69) through its season opener while holding the Chargers to 44.0 percent shooting (33-75). The Owls struggled with free throw opportunities, hitting just 14 of 24 (58.3 percent) from the line, while SBC made 23-36 (77.8) at the charity stripe.
The W held a slight rebounding edge in game one, grabbing 45 boards, compared to 41. The Owls have 12 assists, compared to their opponents 17, and The W has three blocks, while the Charges had two.
The Toppers, who are 2-0 this season after defeating Southeastern Baptist in their season opener and Rust College in game two, have an experienced roster consisting of mostly junior college and college transfers.
Blue Mountain is led offensively by sophomore guard Brandon Jones who averages 13.5 points throughout their first two games and junior forward Lukas Durasas leads the Toppers in rebounds with 8.5 per game.
Last season when the two teams met, The Owls fell 81-74 at home and 77-74 on the road. The W is looking to break the streak and bring home their first victory of the season and against Blue Mountain.
