Men's Basketball to Compete in Talladega College Classic

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Searching for their first win of the season, The W Owls return to action on Friday, Nov. 15 when they travel to Talladega, Ala. for the Talladega College Classic. During the two-day event, the Owls will face Rust College on Friday at 4 p.m. and Talladega at 5 p.m. inside the Tornado Alley Gymnasium.

The W (0-2) is coming off a tough 70-66 loss at Blue Mountain College on Tuesday afternoon at Tyler Gymnasium. Keith Harris paced the Owls with a career-high 31 points. The Starkville, Miss. native was one rebound short of a double-double with nine boards and one steal.

The W had one other player in double figures in Tuesday's competition versus the Toppers. Senior guard Tavonta Jones contributed 17 points with nine rebounds.

Harris now leads the team in scoring and is tied for second on the team in rebounding on the season. The senior scores 24.5 points per game, while pulling down an average of 6.0 rebounds. Jones is second on the team in scoring, pouring in 23.0 points per game, while Carlos Wilkerson leads the team in rebounds with 7.0 boards per game. Wilkerson is also third on the team in scoring with 9.0 points per game.

The Owls have struggled since their opening weekend against Southeastern Baptist to finish close contested games. The W averages 77.5 points per game and outrebounds its opponent by an average of 7.0 boards per game.

As a team, The W has more accuracy from the floor than its opponent, averaging 43.1 percent (56 of 130) while holding the competition to 41.0 percent (57 of 139). The Owls also shoot better from beyond the arc, averaging 29.5 percent (30 of 45) while their competition sees 21.6 percent (48 of 67).

The W struggles at the line going 30 for 45 for 66.7 percent while teams faced see 71.6 percent (48 of 67).

Rust will be the first team the Owls will face in the Talladega Classic. Rust, a member of the NAIA Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, is 0-6 this season. The Bearcats are coming off a 91-85 loss to Texas College on Saturday. Jordan Jackson leads Rust in scoring, averaging 21.0 points per game.

Closing out the tournament, The W will take on host-team Talladega College. Talladega, also a member of the GCAC, is 5-1 on the season. The Tornadoes are coming off an 84-75 loss versus LSU –Alexandria. Darryl Baker leads Talladega in scoring with 20.3 points per game.
