CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Owls men's soccer team started the 2018 season with a bang to defeat Blackburn College 2-0 on Friday, Aug. 31.
"Our men were focused throughout the match and applied lessons learned from our previous match. Our attack was dangerous creating quality chances throughout the game," stated head coach Tim Gould. "We also earned the teams first clean sheet and did a good job limiting shots on goal as our team shape and pressing was much improved."
In the season opener, two Owls collected goals to aid their team in its first victory of the season. LaRico Lewis, a junior forward, scored The W's first goal. After an earlier shot on goal, Lewis was able to plant a goal pass the Blackburn goalie just 14 minutes into the first half with an assist from Jose Morphis.
The Owls would continue to kick shot after shot for the rest of the half but were unable to land a second first half goal.
In the second half, Kyle Rodriguez entered the match and made an almost immediate impact. Just 11 minutes after subbing in and 70:51 into the game, Rodriguez scored the Owls second goal unassisted to give The W a 2-0 victory.
Lewis, a Douglassville, Ga. native, led the Owls offense with the first goal and five shots (two on goal) and the Owls goalkeeper John McGee played the entire 90 minutes for his first victory with one save.
The Owls outplayed the Beavers with 17 shots to their opponents four. The W kept the Blackburn goalie busy with eight shots on goal and two scored goals.
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 1 when they take on Berea College. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
