CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Owls men's soccer team started the 2018 season with a 2-0 victory over Blackburn College 2-0 but was unable to come out on top once in overtime against Berea College leaving the score 2-1.
"Today's match was a difficult test as we played our only back to back matches of the season. We played hard and had chances throughout the match,"explained Tim Gould, head coach for the Owls men's soccer team. "The match opened up in the second half and OT. Berea eventually earned the game winner just moments after we missed a great opportunity."
Freshman midfielder Joshua Frankenstein led the Owls offense with one goal and a .667 shot on goal percentage. The Neunegoers, Germany native scored the Owls only goal of the day off an assist from Josh Martin just 12:04 into the game.
Jakob Williams, junior from Moorpark, Calif., spent the entire 95 minute game defending the Owls goal. Williams tallied five saves with just two goals allowed.
"We look forward to the week ahead of training as we prepare for Oakwood and Millsaps our next two opponents," continued Gould. "We have several areas to focus on tactically while also wanting to improve overall level of fitness."
The Owls will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 9 when they host Oakwood. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. at the Columbus Soccer Complex.
