Owls 1-1 Tie in First Round Forces Shootout

Virginia Beach, VA. – The No. 6 seeded Owls men's soccer team opened the 2019 USCAA Division I Soccer National Championship against Fort Kent Thursday, November 7.

 During the first half, the Owls were unable to score but they did a great deal of defending. At the end of the first half, the Owls were behind 0-1. As the second half approached, the Owls presented new levels of offense and defense as Jacob Thomas assisted Zerick Brown in the Owls' first and final goal bringing the score to a 1-1 tie.

By the end of the second, the Owls tallied five shots and four shots on goal.

Going into overtime, the W continued to fight against the Bengals forcing double overtime.

At the end of double overtime, the two teams were forced to trade penalty kicks in a shootout. Thomas and Joshua Frankenstein landed thier kicks but that would be it for the Owls scoring effort. The Bengals landed three penalty kicks to the Owls two to win the shootout challenge.  

Junior Selvin Lopez covered the goal the entire 110 minutes for the Owls while allowing one goal and collecting eight saves with nine shots on goal.

The Owls will be back in action Saturday, November 9 at 11:15 a.m. when they take on Florida National University on Day 2 of the Tournament.
