JACKSON, Miss. – The Owls men's cross country team finished 18th in a field of 20 during the 2019 Mississippi College Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 12. With an average time of 31:57.55 and a point total of 552, The W outpaced the University of Arkansas-Monticello by 17 points and Stillman College by 47 points.
Joshua Maughan led the Owls effort on the course to complete the 8k competition in 30:59.19.
Jonathan Mathis finished second for The W to grab his second personal record of the season with a time of 31:10. David Young and David Standifer finished within a second of each other for both to PR with times of 31:47.23 and 31:8.41 respectively.
"[This was] the best end to the regular season we could ask for," said head coach Morgan Turnipseed. "The men's cross country team went all out for their last scheduled meet of the year. As a coach, seeing your team compete with a level of determination you haven't seen yet is exciting."
"The Choctaw Trails course is by far the hardest course we run all year," she continued. "That didn't hold our team back one bit. The cold weather made for a great race day, but the effort of these young men made for an incredible end of the schedule for the Owls."
The Owls men's cross country team will now wait for news to see if they qualify for the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Cross Country Championship Meet. If they qualify, the Owls will travel to Virginia Beach, Va. for the 8k competition on Friday, Nov. 8.
