COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women's softball team will be back on its home field on Sunday, Feb. 18 when it hosts Huntingdon College in a noon doubleheader. The Owls enter Sunday's competition 1-1 on the season while the Hawks are 1-3.
The W is coming off a dramatic season opener. In the doubleheader action, the Owls fell 12-1 to Millsaps College in game one but was able to come back and defeat the Majors 7-2 in game two.
With six at-bats, Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson leads the Owls offense with a .333 batting average. In the season opener, Wilkinson played in both games for one run, two hits, and two RBIs.
On the field, Kristen Martin, junior first baseman, leads the defense with 12 putouts and no errors.
On the mound, Cara Hopper, red-shirt senior, was credited with the Owls win. The Steens, Miss. native pitched the entire seven-inning game for nine hits against, two earned runs, and four walks. The right-hander holds an earned run average of 2.00.
The Hawks will come to Don Usher Field after also collecting their first win of the season against Belhaven College. Huntingdon split the doubleheader with the Blazers, falling 7-5 in game one and winning 4-3 in game two.
On the season, Rayne Ellis leads the Hawks offense with a .231 batting average. Ellis is also responsible for two runs, three hits, and one RBI.
On the mound, Lindsey Selph collected the Hawks win against Belhaven. The senior pitched the entire seven-inning game for five hits against, three earned runs, four walks, and two strikeouts. She is holds a 3.00 earned average.
