Softball Sweeps Huntingdon in Doubleheader Action, 9-1 and 10-2

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Madison Scoggin and Ciara Steward picked up their first wins on the mound for The W to help lead their team in a doubleheader sweep over Huntingdon College. The Owls advance to 3-1 on the season, defeating the Hawks 9-1 and 10-2 on Sunday, Feb. 18 at Don Usher Softball Field.

GAME ONE (W, 9-1 – 6 innings)

Pitching the entire six-inning game, Madison Scoggin improved her pitching record to 1-1, grabbing her first win on the mound as a member of the Mississippi University for Women softball team. The Bay Springs, Miss. native allowed four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Trusting in herself and her defense, Scoggin allowed only one earned run in the first game of the day.

At the plate, Anna Lloyd and Brianna Duquette led their team with three hits on four at-bats. Lloyd, a Batesville, MS native, recorded three runs and two stolen bases while Duquette tallied three RBIs.

Katlyn Duke and Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson also stood out for the Owls with Duke collecting two hits, two RBIs, and one run and Wilkinson grabbing two RBIs, one hit, and one run.

The W scored nine runs on 10 hits and two errors while holding the Hawks to one run on four hits and two errors. 

GAME TWO (W, 10-2)

In her first appearance on the mound for The W, Ciara Steward entered game two in relief to record her first win and push her team to the sweep. The Bruce, Miss. native pitched 2.2 inning for no hits or runs with one strikeout.

At the plate, Kristen Martin, Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson, and Katlyn Duke led the Owls offense with 2-for-3 appearances. Martin collected a total of two RBIs and one run, Wilkinson tallied two RBIs and one run and Duke was responsible for one RBI and two runs.

Makayla Taylor also put in work for the Owls with a triple for two RBIs.

To close the game, Martin delivered a double to send Kandler Flora home in the bottom of the sixth. With the run, Flora grabbed the Owls 10th run over the Hawks 2 to bring the match to an early end.

In the doubleheader closer, the Owls recorded 10 runs on 11 hits and two errors while holding Huntingdon to two runs on two hits and three errors. 


The Owls will travel to Selma, Ala. on Tuesday, Feb. 20 to take on Concordia College – Alabama. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
