SPARTANSBURG, S.C. – The Owls softball team completed the four-game series sweep against Converse College on Wednesday, March 14. The W, now 12-8, defeated the Valkyries 4-2 and 6-1 in day two to go 4-0 in the match-up.

For the second time this week, junior pitcher Madison Scoggin pitched a complete game to grab her fifth win on the mound as a member of the Owls softball team. The Bay Springs, Miss. native pitched all seven innings for five strike outs, two runs (one earned), and five hits against.

At the plate, Kristen Martin led her team's offense with a 2-for-2 appearance with one run and one RBI, while Katlyn Duke, junior infielder, led the team in RBIs with two.

The game began slow for both teams with The W scoring the first runs of the game in the top of the third. Martin recorded an RBI with a single to center field to push Kandler Flora home and Duke singled to centerfield to allow Martin and Heidi Matthews to score.

The Valkyries made it to the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Owls lead to 3-2.

With a double to left center by Flora in the top of the sixth, Brianna Duquette scored the fourth and final run of the game to extend the lead and secure the win for the Owls 4-2.

Cara Hopper pitched her third complete game of the season for the Owls win on the mound. The senior right-hander pitched seven-innings for five strikeouts, one earned run, and seven hits against.

Kristen Martin again led her team at the plate with a 3-for-4 outing with one run and one RBI and Duke stepped up again with two RBIs.

The Owls and the Valkyries put up a run each in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1.

The W broke the tie in the top of the third with a single run scored by Anna Lloyd on a sacrifice fly from Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson.

The Owls defense held strong and prevented Converse from getting across home plate, while the offense continued to push with a big inning in the seventh.

In its final turn at-bat, The W scored four runs. Martin singled to left field to push Kandler Flora across home, Duke singled to centerfield to bring Matthew and Lloyd home, and Brianna Duquette positioned a sacrifice fly to bring Martin home.

"Our pitching was solid and after the first inning we played some solid defense. Madison Scoggin and Cara Hopper stepped up and held the team together with some great timely pitches when we needed them."
