COLUMBUS, Miss. – Fun and excitement is coming to the The W campus as the Owls usher in the 2018 homecoming festivities. For the first time in 15 years, the homecoming activities will include athletics with doubleheader action on both the softball and baseball fields.
In this year's homecoming softball game on Saturday, March 24, the Owls will take on Concordia College – Alabama for the second time this season. In the last meeting, The W took both games of the road doubleheader, defeating the Hornets 19-3 and 10-2 in five innings.
In the homecoming doubleheader, the Owls will look to several players to carry The W offense. At the plate, Heidi Matthews leads the Owls with a .365 batting average and a .472 one base percentage. The Coward, S.C. native has played in all 24 games to record 74 at-bats, 21 runs, and 27 hits (four doubles) for a 10 RBIs, and a .419 slugging percentage.
Leading the Owls in RBIs, Katlyn Duke has tallied 21 RBIs in 24 games with 80 at-bats, 15 runs, and 25 hits (four doubles and two triples) for a .313 batting average, a .349 on base percentage, and a .412 slugging percentage.
Other standout players on the Owls offense are Kristen Martin with a .471 on base percentage and a .471 slugging percentage, Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson who has only played in 22 games but has managed to record 20 RBIs, and Anna Lloyd who leads the Owls with 22 runs.
The Owls pitching staff is led by The W starters Madison Scoggin and Cara Hopper. Scoggin usually takes the first leg of a doubleheader for 14 appearances and 12 starts. With a 5-5 record this season, the Bay Springs, Miss. natives holds a 2.97 ERA with six complete games, 61.1 inning pitched, 30 strikeouts, and 44 runs (26 earned).
Hopper, the Owls only senior, usually starts the second game to tally 14 appearances and 12 starts so far this season. The Steens, Miss. native holds a 4-5 record with one save for three complete games, 51.1 innings pitched, 34 strikeouts, and 59 hits against.
As a team, the Owls are 12-12 on the season with 140 runs, a .309 batting average, a .388 on base percentage, and a .372 slugging percentage.
