Softball to Take on the Talladega Tornadoes

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls softball team will host Talladega College on Monday, March 26 to begin the week in doubleheader action. The W, 14-12, will face the 11-14 Tornadoes at 3 p.m. at Don Usher Field.

The Owls are riding high after homecoming back-to-back victories over Concordia College-Alabama and look to keep the momentum going against NAIA rival Talladega.

The W offense has had many successes this season, playing in 26 games for 167 runs to maintain at .317 batting average, a .404 on base percentage, and a .393 slugging percentage.

Leading the Owls at the plate, junior infielder Heidi Matthews has played in 25 of the 26 games for 76 at-bats, 22 runs, 28 hits (five doubles) for 12 RBIs, a .368 batting average, a .473 on base percentage, and a .434 slugging percentage. Matthews also leads the Owls in stolen bases with 10.

Junior outfielder Katlyn Duke and junior infielder Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson lead the Owls with 23 RBIs. Duke, a Philadelphia, Miss. native, has played in 25 games with 83 at-bats, 16 runs, 27 hits (four doubles, three triples) for a .325 batting average, a .360 on base percentage and a .446 slugging percentage. Wilkinson, a Mathiston, Miss. native, has played in 24 games to record 79 at-bats, 14 runs, and 25 hits (four doubles, three triples) for a .316 batting average, a .341 on base percentage, and a .443 slugging percentage.

The Owls have two standout starting pitchers; Madison Scoggin and Cara Hopper. Scoggin holds a 2.92 ERA and a 5-5 record. The Bay Springs, Miss native has pitched 62.1 innings for six complete games 33 strikeouts, 44 runs (26 earned), and 83 hits against.

Hopper holds a 4.09 ERA for a 4-5 record. The Steens, Miss. native has pitched 51.1 innings for three complete games, 34 strikeouts, 38 runs (30 earned), and 49 hits against.

Other standouts include Kristen Martin who leads the Owls with a .478 batting average and a .472 slugging percentage and Anna Lloyd who leads the Owls in hits with 31.

The Monday doubleheader will be held at Don Usher Field located on the campus of the Mississippi University for women. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Come out and support the Owls as they look to defeat the Tornadoes.
