COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls softball team went head-to-head with Talladega College on Monday, March 26. In the doubleheader match-up, The W split with the Tornadoes to drop game one 6-1 but pulled it together in game two for the 8-7 victory.
Game One (L, 6-1)
On the mound, junior pitcher Madison Scoggin took the loss in to move to 5-6 on the season. The Bay Springs native pitched 4.1 innings for two strikeouts, four runs (two earned) and four hits against.
Tiffany Phillips, sophomore right-hander, entered the game in relief in the middle of the fifth inning to pitched 2.2 innings for one strikeout, two earned runs, and four hits against.
Game Two (W, 8-7)
The Owls fared better in the second game by gaining an early lead over the Tornadoes. Talladega scored one run in the first and The W answered in the second with six runs for a 6-1 lead.
The Owls stayed ahead, adding two additional runs in the bottom of the six after giving up a run in the fourth.
In the top of the seventh, Talladega rallied for five runs but it was not enough to stop the Owls victory.
On the mound, Cara Hopper grabbed her fifth win of the season. The senior pitcher stayed in the circle for 6.1 innings to record five strikeouts, seven runs (four earned), and eight hits against.
Madison Scoggin stepped on the mound for the last out of the game to grab her first save of the season.
Leading the Owls offense, Kristen Martin had the most successful outing at the plate. Martin recorded two hits on four at-bats for three RBIs and one run. Brianna Duquette and Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson reached home plate twice to lead The W in scoring.
The Owls will return home on Saturday, March 31 when they take on Rust College. The first pitched is scheduled for noon.
