DUBOIS, Penn. – The Owls softball team grabbed an early lead against defending USCAA Small College World Series champions St. Mary of the Woods College in the second round of the tournament. The W battled hard but struggled to prevent an opponent rally falling 5-4.
Junior pitcher Madison Scoggin performed well during her first outing of the tournament. In the first four innings of the match-up, the Bay Springs, Miss. native along with Owls fielders kept SMWC, the second seed of the tournament, scoreless.
Offensively, the Owls jumped ahead of the Pomeroys with four runs scored in the third inning. Anna Lloyd scored The W's first run of the game on a fielder's choice, Katyln Duke scored on a bases loaded walk, and Kristen Martin and Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson scored on a single from Makayla Taylor.
In the fifth inning, SMWC found a rhythm and was able to score five runs against the Owls to take the lead.
The W continued to fight but the Owls were unable to convert runners into runs scored for a 5-4 final score.
Pitching 4.1 innings, Scoggin suffered the loss on the mound to go 7-9 on the season. Senior Cara Hopper entered in the fifth to pitched 1.2 innings for one strikeout and one hit against.
At the plate, freshman designated player Makayla Taylor led the offense with a 2-for-3 appearance for two RBIs. Junior shortstop Katlyn Duke also had a 2-for-3 appearance with one run to aid in the Owls scoring effort.
The Owls will be back in action on Tuesday, May 15 at 6 p.m. EST/5 p.m. when they continue their fight to the championship game. The opponent has not been determined. Keep up with the live stats and watch it live: HERE.
