Owls Softball Opens 2019 Season at Home Against Rust

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Following a historic comeback season in 2018, in which the Owls softball team finished fifth in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series, The W now turns its attention to the 2019 season, which kicks off on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT. The Owls will open the season at home in doubleheader action against in-state rival Rust College on Don Usher Field.

The Owls will return to action under the new direction of first-year head coach John Newman. "I'm blessed to have this opportunity," stated Newman. "We have great facilities and a lot of support from the community. The [young ladies] have worked hard. From the first fall practice, it has been a rewarding ride. The team is excited about the season ahead."

The Owls return eight of its starting nine including senior outfielder Anna Lloyd, senior infielder Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson", senior utility player Heidi Matthews, senior utility player Kristen Martin, senior catcher Brianna Duquette, senior outfielder Kandler Flora, and senior utility player Bailee Watts. On the mound, the Owls return senior Madison Scoggin, senior Ciara Steward, and junior Tiffany Phillips.

New faces on the field this year include utility player Megan James, outfielder Emily Littlejohn, outfielder Madison Fields, and pitcher Donna Douglas.

The Owls finished the 2018 season 21-19 with major victories over Millsaps College, Huntingdon College, Southern Wesleyan, and Penn State Beaver. This season The W will be tasked with competing against NCAA DI opponent Mississippi Valley State on March 26 as well as former NCAA Division II power Pfeiffer University during the Triangle Classic in Cary, N. C.
