COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls softball team improves to 4-0 on the season, sweeping the Pioneers of Crowley's Ridge College in doubleheader action on Saturday, Feb. 16. Closing both games in just five innings, The W defeated Crowley's Ridge 17-0 in game one and 9-0 in game two.
Game One (W, 17-0)
Senior right-hander Madison Scoggin pitched her second complete game of the season Saturday afternoon, facing 17 batters with four strikeouts and two hits. With no runs and no walks, the Hattiesburg, Miss. native moves to 2-0 on the mound.
At the plate, senior outfielder Kristen Martin led the Owls offensive effort. Also from Hattiesburg, the left fielder went 4-for-4 at the plate for three runs and four RBIs. Bailee Watts came in a close second, going 3-for-3 at the plate with four runs and two RBIs.
With Watts at the plate in the bottom of the first inning, the Owls grabbed two early runs. The Bishopville, S.C. native doubled to allow Heidi Matthews to score then came home on a double by Martin.
In the second, Watts put down another double to push Kandler Flora home and a failed rundown on the same play by the Pioneers defense allowed Matthews to score her second run of the game. In the inning, Martin tripled and Littlejohn doubled for an RBI each extending the Owls lead to 6-0.
The third inning was a large inning for The W offensively. The Owls recorded six runs on five hits and one error. During the inning, Megan James slapped her first single of outing for an RBI and Martin and Littlejohn added another hit and an RBI each to extend the Owls lead to 12-0.
The Owls took their final at-bat of the game in the fourth inning. The W scored five runs on four hits and one error for the 17-0 victory.
Game Two (W, 9-0)
Ciara Steward, a senior left-hander from Oxford, Miss., improved to 2-0 on the mound in the Owls second victory against Crowley's Ridge. Pitching 3.0 innings, Steward faced 11 batters for three strikeouts, one hit, and one walk.
Amelia Stalter entered the game in the second inning to face nine batters with one strikeout, one walk, and one hit against.
At the plate, Watts led the Owls offensively with a 3-for-3 appearance with two runs and two RBIs.
All of the Owls runs were scored in the bottom of the first. Martin began the offensive run with a sacrifice fly that allowed Heidi Matthews to score. Brianna Duquette followed with a single to bring Watts home and Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson singled to bring Duquette home.
Anna Lloyd hit into a fielder's choice and was credited with an RBI when James made it home.
Flora also hit into a fielder's choice for an RBI with a scored run by Wilkinson.
Watts grabbed two additional RBIs when she singled to bring Flora and Littlejohn home and Martin closed the scoring run with a single for two additional RBIs.
The Owls will return to action on Friday, Feb. 22 when they travel to Fayetteville, N.C. to take on Methodist University. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. CT.
