COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls softball team took on the Crusaders of the University of Dallas on Wednesday, March 13. The W appeared to be equally matched with its USCAA sister-institution with both games of the doubleheader being decided in the final innings of the competition.
The Owls played well defensively to take game one 1-0 in the eighth inning and dropped game two 5-3 with their opponent scoring all five runs in the seventh inning.
Game One (W, 1-0)
The Owls outlasted the Crusaders in an extra inning to defeat Dallas 1-0 in eight innings of play.
Dallas jumped ahead of The W in hitting, connecting with the ball twice in the top of the first to record two hit and grabbing a third in the top of the third.
The Owls answered in the bottom of the inning for their first hit when Kandler Flora laid down a bunt to reach first. The W added a second hit in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Heidi Matthews.
After remaining scoreless after seven innings of play, the Owls finally reached the board in the bottom of the eighth to close out the game. Kristen Martin started the inning with a single up the middle. Anna Lloyd landed a bunt to allow Martin to advance two bases and Bailee Watts sent Martin home on a single to the shortstop.
In the effort, Martin and Watts led the Owls at the plate. Both Owls had a 1-for-3 appearance while Martin collected one run and Watts recorded an RBI.
On the mound, Madison Scoggin recorded her fifth win of the season. The Bay Springs, Miss. native pitched all eight innings for three hits against, two strikeouts, and one walk.
Game Two (L, 5-3)
The W broke the seal on scoring early in game two with two runs scored in the first inning. Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson singled to the shortstop for an RBI and freshman Anna Kate McDaniel earned an RBI on a fielder's choice.
In the sixth inning, the Owls added another run with Wilkinson collecting her second RBI of the day on a ground out that allowed Bailee Watts to score.
In the seventh, The W bullpen tired and the Crusaders were able to jump ahead with five runs to come from behind and grab the win.
On the mound, senior pitcher Ciara Steward recorded her first loss of the season. The lefthander from Oxford, Miss. entered the game in the top of the fourth to pitch 3.1 innings for five hits against and five earned runs.
At the plate, Bailee Watts led her team with a 2-for-3 appearance with two runs while Wilkinson racked up two RBIs.
The Owls will host Hendrix College on Saturday, March 16. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
