Softball Takes Rust in Doubleheader Action, 15-0 and 11-2

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – The Owls softball team traveled to Holly Springs, Miss. to take on Rust College in doubleheader action on Friday, March 29. Following a sweep over Judson College at home, The W was able to repeat the feat on the road, taking down the Bearcats in the first game 15-0, and claiming the second win, 11-2.

GAME ONE (W, 15-0)

For the first game of Friday's doubleheader, The W (17-6) started junior right-hander Tiffany Phillips for her first start on the mound this year. Phillips helped her team cruise over Rust, pitching the entire 5-inning game, for four strikeouts and six hits against.

Senior infielder Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson singled to centerfield in the top of the first inning to give the Owls an early 1-0 lead.

In the second, Jana Kay Newell singled to right field for an RBI and scored on a single to the pitcher by Kandler Flora. Flora rounded the bases and made it home on an error by the Bearcat's first baseman and Heidi Matthews scored on a wild pitch to give The W a 5-0 advantage.

The Owls kept the offensive momentum going in the third inning to increase their lead. Anna Lloyd scored on a ground out and Brianna Duquette came in on a throwing error by Rust's third baseman.

Newell scored her second run of the game on a muffed throw by the first baseman and Bailee Watts collected an RBI on a single to center field.

Three more runs came in during the inning for the Owls with Kristen Martin recording an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center field, Wilkinson doubling to centerfield, and Lauren Duckworth singling up the middle. The W closed the third inning ahead 12-0.

The Owls completed their scoring effort in the fourth inning. Emily Littlejohn doubled up the middle for an RBI and Wilkinson singled up the middle for two RBIs for a 15-0 victory.

Leading the Owls at the plate, Wilkinson had a 3-for-4 appearance with four RBIs and one run.

GAME TWO (W, 11-2)

Owls freshman right-hander Amelia Stalter recorded her fourth win on the mound this season in game two of the doubleheader. The Atlantic Beach, Fla. native pitched the complete 6-inning game for 10 strikeouts, two walks, two hits against, and one earned run.

The W struck first again against the Bearcats with four runs scored in the top of the first. Martin led off the scoring effort with a triple to right field for two RBIs. Wilkinson followed with a single to shortstop to bring Martin home and Duquette closed with a sacrifice fly to left field to allow Anna Lloyd to score.

The Bearcats answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring their first run of the day on an error by the Owls first baseman.

The W continued to slap at the plate with an additional five runs in the second inning. Flora scored on a wild pitch. Kristen Martin brought down another triple for two more RBIs and scored on a ground out. Duquette grabbed the last RBI of the inning and gave the Owls a 9-1 lead on a double to center field.

In the third, the Owls went scoreless but Rust scored on a single to right field.

The W closed out the game in the sixth in run-rule fashion with a run scored on a double to center field by Wilkinson followed by Wilkinson scoring on a ground out.

Martin led the Owls offense in game two with a 2-for-2 appearance for four RBIs and two runs scored.

UP NEXT

The Owls will be back in action on Saturday, March 30 when they host Agnes Scott in this year's homecoming doubleheader. The first pitch is set for noon.
