JACKSON, Miss. - The Owls softball team split a doubleheader with in-state rival Millsaps College on Tuesday, April 16 at the Millsaps Softball Complex. The Owls dropped game one 3-2 but had a fierce comeback for a 8-2 victory in game two. The Owls move to 22-9 on the season.
GAME ONE (L, 3-2)
The Owls struggled to get the ball going in game one, finding themselves behind 2-1 after six innings. The W continued to battle to cut down Millsaps' lead with one run in the top of the seventh.
With the scored tied 2-2, the game was forced into an eighth inning. Millsaps beat the Owls to the punch with a run scored in the bottom of the inning to claim the victory.
Leading the Owls at the plate, left fielder Kristen Martin had a 2-for-3 appearance while Lloyd collected the only RBI.
On the mound, Madison Scoggin was credited with the loss. The senior left-hander pitched a complete seven-inning game for three strikeouts, seven hits against, and two earned runs.
GAME TWO (W, 8-2)
Despite the Majors out-hitting The W 11-7, the Owls were able to get runners in scoring position to outlast Millsaps and take the victory.
The Owls started on top leading the Majors 6-0 at the end of three.
The W continued its scoring effort in the sixth with two runs as Kristen Martin singled up the middle allowing Heidi Matthews to score and Emily Littlejohn grounded out to second allowing Baliee Watts to score.
In the bottom, Millsaps attempted a comeback with runs scored on a single and a double but it was not enough to put the Majors back in the game.
Ciara Steward pitched the first 6.0 innings for the Owls victory on the mound. The senior from Oxford,Miss. delivered one strikeout with two earned runs.
The Owls will travel on Friday, April 19 to face Crowley's Ridge. The first pitch of the doubleheader matchup is set for noon.
