Columbus, MS – The Owls took on Stillman College in their StrikeOut Cancer game Friday afternoon. The Owls went away with the sweep, defeating Stillman College 9-6 in game one and 8-0 in 5 innings for game two.
Game One (W, 9-6)
The W started junior pitcher Mackenzie Denton for the game against the Tigers. Denton pitched all 7 innings collecting the win and allowing zero walks.
The Tigers' offense started quickly with a home run going up 2-0 in the first inning. The Owls' offense was quick to retaliate with a run of their own with junior Megan Cummins collecting an RBI to put the Owls within one run.
The Owls tied the score up 3-3 with juniors Austyn Holden and Kelsie Gerhart collecting an RBI each. Cummins started the bottom of the fifth inning with stand up double to get the Owls going. Sophomore James pushed her through to give the Owls the lead 4-3. The W's offense kept going with Gerhart, Newell, Duckworth, and Cummins collecting an RBI each in the fifth inning.
The Owls took the win 9-6. Cummins lead at the plate going 3-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBIs.
Game Two (W, 8-0)
Junior Kaitlyn Parrish started in the circle for the Owls in game two of the evening. Parrish shutout the Tigers' offense only allowing 3 hits and no walks.
The Owls kept the bats going into game two against the Tigers. James got things going with a single to start the 2nd inning. Holden hit a ball into the left-center gap and James showing off her speed scored from first base for the first run of the game. The Owls scoring was a team effort with the line-up producing all the way through.
The W defeated the Tigers, 8-0 in five innings. At the plate, was sophomore Miranda Nash going 2-for-3 on the day and Cummins collecting 3 RBIs on the night.
The Owls will travel to Georgia Tuesday, March 3rd to take on Agnes in a doubleheader starting at 2 pm.
