LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The W women's basketball team prepare for its return to the court after a 16-year hiatus with an exhibition match against Philander Smith College on Thursday, Nov. 1. The Owls did what they could against an already established team but was unable to get passed the Panthers defense in the 58-80 loss.
The Owls struggled to get into a groove offensively hitting just 29.6 percent from the field overall and going 1-8 in three-point range. The W also had some costly turnovers totaling 24 for the game but was also able to force 18 from Philander Smith. The Owls had 45 rebounds while the Panthers grabbed 47. Philander Smith also hit 38.2 percent from the field, going 14-34 in three-point range and 14-22 from the free-throw line.
Junior small forward Qiayon Bailey led The W with 15 points going 5-8 from the field with five free-throws made. The West Point, Miss. native also claimed seven rebounds, three steals, and one block. Fellow junior Rokila Wallace lent 12 points to the Owls offense. The Columbus, Miss. native went 4-15 from the field with four free-throws made, three rebounds, one assist, and three steals. The Owls only senior Tenazhia Hinkson scored 11 points with seven rebounds, four assists, and one steal.
The Owls outscored the Panthers 13-11 by taking advantage of shots at the free-throw line. The W continued to outperform Philander Smith in free-throws but struggled to find shots in the lane and in three-point range to give the Panthers the advantage.
The Owls will have one more exhibition game before the official start of the 2018-19 season. The W will travel to Tougaloo, Miss. to take on in-state foe Tougaloo College on Saturday, Nov. 3. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
