COLUMBUS, Miss. – The No. 1 ranked Owls women's basketball team came out of the gate swinging for an early 22-12 lead over No. 15 Judson. Despite a couple of stumbles and running into foul trouble, The W was able to keep its head above water to defeat the Eagles 66-50. Adding another road, the Owls improve to 6-2 on the season.
Leading the Owls offensively, junior guard Rokila Wallace scored a game-high 21 points with seven boards. The Columbus, Miss. native went 8-for-15 from the field, 1-for-4 in 3-point range, and 4-for-5 at the free throw for one of her most successful road games.
Rounding out double-digit scoring, senior forward Tenazhia Hinkson and junior center Keyahna Jones scored 10 points while pulling down five and nine rebounds respectively. Jones also played well defensively to record a season-high of three blocks.
With a game high of 10 rebounds, junior forward and USCAA Player of the Week Qiayon Bailey was just three points shy of a double-double. She also lent two steals and one assist to the effort.
As a team, the Owls shot 41.0 percent (25-for-61) from the field, 18.2 percent from behind the arc (2-for-11), and 66.7 percent (14-for-21) at the free throw line. The Eagles shot 26.9 percent from the field, 18.2 percent in 3-point range, and 47.4 percent at the line.
The Owls will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 8 when they host Wesleyan College a 2 p.m. Bring an unwrapped toy for the MUW Toy Drive and get free admittance.
