JACKSON, Miss. – Autumn Taylor scored 14 points with three steals, three assists, and three rebounds but the number one ranked Mississippi University for Women's basketball team lost its fourth game of the season to Belhaven University 65-60 on Saturday in the Charles R. Rugg Arena.
After two weeks off, the Owls returned to the court short staffed with only seven players making the trip to Jackson due to travel and weather complications. With just half its roster, The W proved to be a formidable opponent for the Belhaven Blazers ending the first half tied at 25.
With a weak third quarter, The W (10-4) trailed by as many as 10 points before a late rally came up short against the Blazers (6-5).
For Taylor, it was her sixth double-digit scoring effort as an Owl and her second time with her team's game-high. Senior Tenazhia Hinkson and junior Starlandria Walton also lent double-digit numbers to the Owls score with 12 points each.
"We played well for a team that was missing four of its key players," said head coach Howard White. "We only turned the ball over 10 times but we were only 13 for 24 from the free-throw line and that was the biggest difference in the game and it was hard for us to get production from our post game because we were missing two key post players. Overall, I was very proud of how they played as a team and how hard they fought every possession."
The Owls return to action on Saturday, Jan 13 when they travel to Macon, Ga. to take on Wesleyan College. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
