SUMTER, S.C. – The Owls women's basketball team ends its South Carolina swing on a high note, defeating Morris College 78-49 on Saturday, Feb. 2. With the victory over the Hornets, the Owls move to 15-6 on the season.
Starlandria Walton went 8-for-16 from the floor including 2-for-5 in three-point range with two free throws to lead the Owls with a game-high of 20 points. The junior guard also grabbed six assists, four rebounds, and two steals.
Off the bench, Katlyn Duke shot a season-high 15 points. The Philadelphia, Miss. native went 6-for-14 from the field and 3-for-6 beyond the arc to aid in the scoring effort. She was also credited with nine rebounds and three assists.
Rounding out double-digit scoring, junior forward Qiayon Bailey lent 13 points to the Owls game. The West Point, Miss. native also brought down six boards with three assists.
As a team, the Owls shot 46.9 percent from the field, 31.6 percent in long range, and 54.4 percent at the free-throw line. The W held Morris to 29.0 percent from the field with 23.8 percent in three-point range. At the line, the Hornets fared better than the Owls making 4 of 5 for 80.0 percent.
The W outrebounded the Hornets 56-31 and outscored them in the paint 32-14. The Owls struggled with ball handling with 21 turnovers while only forcing 15 from Morris. The Hornets scored 13 points off the Owls mistakes but The W tallied 15 from their miscues.
The W will return to action on Monday, Feb. 4 when they host Oakwood University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
